The state is requiring Duxbury reduce its per person water consumption, something town officials believe may not be necessary or achievable without completely eliminating outdoor watering in the summer.
On Monday the Board of Selectmen heard from Duxbury Water Superintendent Peter Mackin who said the town’s 20-year water withdrawal permit from the state is set to expire August 31. It was due to expire in 2010, but the town received a fouryear extension and then was granted another one-year permit extension.
Mackin said the state is requiring that Duxbury reduce its per person water consumption from 80 gallons per day to 65 gallons per day. The new permit will allow Duxbury to withdraw 1.51 million gallons per day, down from the 1.85 million gallons per day limit currently in place.
Mackin said the town cannot meet the new requirements with the way residents currently use water outdoors in the summer.
“Mandatory outdoor watering bans will be necessary to achieve these performance standards,” Mackin stated in a memo to selectmen.
