Substance abuse letter from Duxbury Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ben Tantillo

Dear Parents,

I want to provide an update to you regarding an issue that is of great concern to me.  Many of you have already received a letter from DHS Principal Andrew Stevens regarding recent incidents involving some of our students. There have been many rumors throughout town about the substance abuse issue at the high school.  I would like to address that here.

Like so many high schools across the country, and particularly on the South Shore, students are increasingly making dangerous choices. This is a pattern of behavior that we’ve seen with greater frequency over the past several years - and one that is causing a heightened concern about the well being of our students.  Our latest Senior Night Boat Cruise had incidents of substance abuse not seen since 2007. As a result, some previously silent members of our community have come forward with their much-needed vocal support.

The high school administration has been very consistent in having students who have chosen to abuse alcohol and drugs face the consequences that are outlined in our student handbook. They will continue to do so.  Our only desire is to keep our students as safe as possible.

It’s important to remember that the learning process involves more than academics.  It also includes learning how to be a responsible member of your community – by following rules, being on time and completing work assignments. These are skills that are critically important as our students transcend college and enter the world of work.

We are very concerned about the safety of our students. We are addressing the issue in a myriad of ways involving partnerships between the schools, parents, students, community and law enforcement. We’re developing a comprehensive wellness program that will be implemented throughout our schools.  As part of that, we’ve held several presentations on this topic for our students, staff and parents. Additionally, the FACTS community group continues to be very active within the town to bring about a change in behavior and assistance, when needed, for our young community members.

I am asking for your help in this matter.  As parents, please be vigilant in letting your children know that it is not acceptable to abuse alcohol or drugs.  I have outlined the many steps we are taking as a school community, but you have the most influence on your children.

Thank you,

Dr. Ben Tantillo

Superintendent
